Smart parking consulting

If you remove ramps and walkways for drivers, the same plot can hold far more cars. In return, structure, ventilation and payback must be worked out from the start.

There are several types of mechanized parking: rotating towers, stacking systems, and rack systems in which automated vehicles carry cars into parking bays. Each type gives a different number of spaces per square meter, a different investment cost and different structural requirements.

CGD advises from selecting the system type and building the financial model through to the construction design: the floor frame structure for vehicle and equipment loads, ventilation, fire protection, charging stations and traffic organization for entry and exit.

Scope of work

  • Compare mechanization types by the number of parking spaces achieved on the same land area
  • Financial model: investment cost per parking space, revenue from hourly and monthly tickets, cash flow and payback period
  • Frame and floor structure designed for vehicle loads and operating equipment loads
  • Forced ventilation and smoke extraction for enclosed parking spaces
  • Fire protection for parking garages, including areas for electric vehicles
  • Charging station: capacity, location and impact on the building's electrical system
  • Traffic organization for entry and exit, and connection to existing roads

Why choose CGD for this work

  • A financial model has been built for a mechanized parking lot with hundreds of parking spaces.
  • We place parking within the master layout of the ICD, warehouse or logistics center rather than treating it as a standalone facility.
  • Lead engineers for fire protection and MEP are on the team — the two disciplines that matter most for this type of facility.

Frequently asked questions

Does smart parking have to use self-propelled vehicles?

No. Rotary towers and mechanical stacking systems are simpler, cheaper and suit many small plots. Self-propelled vehicles make more sense at large scale.

Roughly what is the investment cost per parking space?

The range is very wide across system types and suppliers. We build a separate spreadsheet based on each owner's site and target number of spaces rather than giving a single general figure.

Has CGD completed any smart parking project?

Not yet. What we have done are options and a financial model. Regular parking facilities are in our project portfolio.
