Inland waterway ports and seaports

Waterports are subject to an additional constraint that onshore structures do not have: the water surface changes with the seasons and the water. The design must match the wharf to the channel, the harbor back yard to the wharf, and both to the road behind.

Where do investors often get stuck?

Water level and berth elevation

If the wharf is too high, loading and unloading will be difficult in the dry season, if it is too low, it will be flooded in the flood season. The wharf surface elevation must be chosen according to the design water level range, not based on feelings.

Channel and ship design

The size of the actual operating vessel is limited by the channel, the bridge clearance on the route and the turning basin - choosing a wrongly designed vessel means the berth will not be fully utilized or cannot be used at all.

The rear of the port

Yards, warehouses and service roads behind wharves are often narrow because they are stuck between the river and residential areas; Port capacity is often blocked at the shore, not at the wharf.

Security corridor and procedures

Constructions close to rivers and dykes that obstruct the protection corridors of irrigation works, dykes and navigation channels - need to be included in the legal progress from the beginning.

Specific design constraints

  • Berth surface elevation according to design water level and operating load
  • The wharf structure and bank reinforcement are suitable for the riverbed geology
  • Cargo yard, logistics warehouse behind the port, service road connecting the wharf
  • Loading and unloading equipment suitable for the type of goods: rotating crane, wheeled crane, conveyor belt
  • Operator of exploitation and technical infrastructure

Frequently asked questions

What do inland waterway ports need to survey before designing?

At a minimum, topography, river bed and bank geology, hydrological regime (seasonal water level) and channel status. Without hydrological data, the wharf elevation is just a guess.

Should we build a warehouse right behind the wharf?

Depends on product type. Bulk and bagged goods often need warehouses close to the dock to reduce transit time; For container goods, priority is given to yards and open roads rather than warehouses.
