Port and ICD size: how much land does this throughput need?
Enter one annual TEU throughput — the tool runs the whole chain of quay, container yard and truck gate and returns the total land area, with links to each detailed tool using the same parameters.
What the model calculates, and what it doesn't
One input runs the entire chain using the exact models of each detailed tool: quay by Erlang C queueing (berth occupancy ≤ 60%), yard by the ground slot formula and rehandling simulation, gate by second-by-second simulation of the worst day. Area outside the yard (apron, gate, support facilities) is a planning assumption stated below the results.
Not calculated: reefer containers, dangerous goods, large CFS warehouses, rail, landscaping, land reserved for expansion, geological and hydrological conditions. Use for a brief and for comparing options; finalizing the master plan requires real cargo flow data.
Frequently asked questions
How much land is needed for ICD of 300,000 TEU/year?
With a 5-day dwell time, 4-high stacking, reach stackers and all cargo moving by road, the tool estimates about 12–13 ha: over 10 ha is the stacking area, the rest is gate and support facilities. Switching to RTGs or shortening dwell time cuts the land requirement noticeably.
Why are the results different from the common TEU/ha numbers?
TEU/ha depends strongly on dwell time, stacking height and equipment. For the same throughput, a 10-day dwell time needs twice as many ground slots as 5 days. That is why the tool calculates from your inputs instead of applying a generic factor.

This simulation stops at the principle. For a specific project, CGD builds the model on real operating data and floor plan drawings.
